Dumbbell Overhead Standard
The standard dumbbell overhead press is a compound shoulder exercise targeting the deltoids. Pressing dumbbells overhead while standing builds shoulder strength and stability, with core engagement required to maintain an upright posture under load.
- Equipment
- dumbbells
- Typical range
- 8–15 reps
- Also works
- triceps, back
01 · Set up
Stand with a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing slightly forward.
Set your feet about hip-width apart, brace your abdomen, and keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis.
02 · Perform
Press both dumbbells upward until they finish over your shoulders without leaning your torso backward.
Keep your forearms close to vertical and avoid knocking the dumbbells together overhead.
Lower the dumbbells to shoulder height under control and reset your brace before the next repetition.
Coaching tips
- Keep the non-working joints still.
- Use the full controlled range.
- Own the return phase.
Common mistakes
- Moving the torso to create momentum.
- Using resistance that shortens the range.
- Letting the resistance drop on the return.
What it should feel like
Expect the shoulders to do most of the work, without sharp or joint-focused pain.
Stop or modify when
Stop or shorten the range for sharp, sudden, worsening, or joint-focused pain.
